The Novel
A Private Language
Jorji has a talent for noticing things. As a writer, he considers this a professional advantage. In most other areas of life, the evidence is less convincing.
Ani studies cultural history. She knows that the objects people leave behind can tell remarkable stories, provided nobody gets carried away inventing the missing parts.
When she offers Jorji shelter beneath her umbrella on a rainy Paris afternoon, he refuses with an elegant remark. Then he realizes that elegance has left him standing in the rain.
Their unlikely romance develops its own peculiar institutions: an Academy of Madness, an Archive of observations, elaborate rules for physical exploration, and an absolute right of veto.
Ani refuses to be merely the subject of Jorji's observations. She corrects his theories, challenges his conclusions, and contributes a considerable amount of delightful disorder to his carefully arranged existence.
Between arguments, kisses, and the alarming discovery that sharing a kitchen may be more intimate than sharing a bed, they begin building a life together.
But Jorji is a writer. And when Ani trusts him with something she never intended to become a story, his instinct to find the perfect sentence threatens everything their imperfect little world has made possible.
WHAT WE LEAVE UNMAPPED is an unpublished literary romantic comedy about desire, trust, and the things even the most attentive lover has no right to claim.
The completed manuscript is currently seeking literary representation.
